Recipe for an Olympic win
A YEAR 8 pupil at Theale Green School has been named overall winner in the Taste Kitchen Challenge, a national competition which encouraged schoolchildren to design their own Olympicinspired recipes.
Twelve-year-old Megan Lockley also bagged the top prize in the 1114 category, beating off some 550 competitors, with her steak and veg stir-fry.
The competition was run by Get Set to Eat Fresh with Aldi and Team GB and was open to young people aged five to 14.
As a prize, Megan will receive a piece of signed Olympic merchandise, a Team GB goody bag and Aldi vouchers.
The dish had to include at least two fruits or vegetables and Megan said: “I chose ingredients which represent colours of the Olympic rings: red, yellow and green peppers, and black and blue for the sauce.
“This recipe is suitable for athletes of many Olympic sports, but I’ve focused on taekwondo as athletes on the GB team have inspired me on my own taekwondo journey.
“I’ve also chosen foods which start with the first letter of the five taekwondo tenets – integrity and indomitable spirit (iceberg lettuce), perseverance (peppers), self-control (steak) and courtesy (carrot).”
Theale Green’s assistant headteacher Sam Cartland said: “We are so unbelievably proud of Megan's achievement. Less than two years ago, with the support of the Theale Green parents and local community, we transformed our food technology kitchens and launched food technology back into the curriculum.
“Our students have embraced the opportunity to learn how to cook and Megan’s achievement will go on to inspire so many other students to cook at home.
“We are looking forward to adding this recipe to our curriculum moving forward too.”
