Thatcham raise funds

-

AS well as Thatcham Rugby club being a coronavirus testing station, and members volunteering for the vaccine centre, players have been taking part to raise funds for local charities.

On Saturday, February 6, 16 boys, coaches and a few parents from the under-15s team took to the streets to fulfil a challenge set by their team manager and raise funds for Swings & Smiles, another local charity.

This was a challenge to coincide with the Six Nations rugby, to cover the miles from each stadium starting at Twickenham in London.

From there, the virtual journey took them to Paris, Rome, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Dublin before ending back at Twickenham for the finals on the March 20, a whopping 3,142 miles in total.

With a number of different lockdowns happening since March 2020, and rugby being a primarily contact sport, the boys haven’t been able to play fully since.

So, a challenge to get their team spirit and fitness back was in order.

The weather was not on their side when the challenge started as snow and freezing temperatures took hold, but the players took this all in their stride and pulled off a massive 449 miles in the first week.

By the end of the six weeks, the team had smashed their miles target with 3,548.2 miles in total, raising £1,034 for the Swings & Smiles charity.

Junior rugby restarts at Thatcham Rugby Club on Friday, April 9, much to the players’ delight, and the club are welcoming new players to join the team.
