Ex-mayor steps back from public duties

Council thanks long-serving official for his stalwart service to the town

-

HUNGERFORD Town Council has made a presentation to Martin Crane to thank him for his contribution to the town.

Mr Crane, who served as town mayor from 2011 to 2014 and again from 2015 to 2017, is stepping back from formal civic duties following many years of service.

As well as twice serving as town mayor, Mr Crane headed the council’s tourism and economy committee and was instrumental in the promotion of Hungerford as an ambassador town for the Great West Way tourism project.

Mr Crane also pioneered the successful Hungerford Trade Showcase and created the Freedom of the Town of Hungerford awards in 2012, which continue to this day.

He was presented with a ship’s decanter and four glasses with a message of thanks from the town council.

Although he is bowing out from formal civic life, Mr Crane remains active in a personal capacity.

He has recently challenged civic leaders to embrace a radical new vision for the

town centre.

On Tuesday night, Mr Crane attended an online, full meeting

of the town council, where he praised the dedication and service of current members and said: “The next year, postCovid, will be even more challenging and there will be a need to adapt.

“I’ve discussed a few ideas for the High Street for you to mull over.

“They do need to be considered and it will require coordination from the Town & Manor, the chamber of commerce and West Berkshire Council.

“If that area [of the High Street] is pedestrianised, businesses would need to be able to take up [district council] alfresco licences.”

Mr Crane said he would be “watching carefully” any progress made and thanked councillors for their good wishes and gifts.

Town mayor Helen Simpson said: “We’re so thrilled you liked the present we chose for you and Virginia.

“Thank you for the time and dedication you’ve given to the town and continue to give, even if not part of our team at the moment. We wish you all the very best.”

Mr Crane said his time in public office had been “a pleasure and a privilege”.
