Come into the garden for a spot of tea
HERE’S a sneak preview of a major new project off Hungerford High Street.
Alexander’s Tea Room has created an outside garden in the rear courtyard of Hungerford Arcade, just in time for the relaxing of coronavirus restrictions.
The venture, run by James Hilton and his partner Cheryl Higginbottom, has had a rough ride since it opened last July.
Arcade manager Rita Kibble said: “James has had such bad luck since he took it over with all the lockdowns.
“He’s spent a lot of money since he took it over last year and, unfortunately, has barely been able to open to the public.
“He has now invested a lot more money on the outside garden area making it into a courtyard and with the help of his team, Cheryl, Sally and Izzy, it’s looking beautiful.
“There will be table service so you can just sit down, relax and enjoy the surroundings.
“They’ve even installed a
bicycle rack so you can safely leave your cycles while enjoying the refreshments.”
As the lockdown rules will have eased for the hospitality trade on Monday, staff will only be allowed to serve people in the outside seating area and to provide takeaways in accordance with Government guidelines until the next easing of restrictions in May.
Alexander’s Tea Room takes its historic name from the family grocer, coffee and tea dealer on the same site, which operated until the 1960s.
Mr Hilton said last year: “Running Alexander’s Tea Room is a dream come true, with our love of antiques and catering all coming together.
“It’s a tough time to start a new business, but it makes the challenge even more inviting and we can’t wait to make Alexander’s a great success.”
