Tough 24-hours for charity commuter
AN Aldermaston man has completed a ‘24-hour commute’ in aid of a vaccine charity, walking multiple circuits between his home and workplace.
Nathan Hart, 29, who works at NTT Ltd’s office in Arlington Business Park, Theale, took advantage of a corporate volunteering day to set off on the endeavour. At 11.59pm on March 31, Mr Hart clocked in at 99.63km – just short of his 100km goal. He had started at midnight, with each cycle lasting approximately an hourand-a-half and he walked five miles for each lap.
The feat, inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore, was in support of GAVI, a charity combating global vaccine inequality.
Mr Hart said: “I got two hours sleep the night before. I was just too excited, I could not get to sleep till half-pastnine, 10 o’clock.
He quickly completed the
first
couple of laps, but said that “from the third one onwards, it started to get harder and harder and harder.
“By my first break at about 10 o’clock, my right knee was starting to hurt a little bit behind it.
“That just got sort of progressively worse throughout the day, really, and started to slow me down quite a bit.
“I then had my dad come and join me for the fifth lap. He really pushed me on that one, to be fair.
“I had my brother come and join me for the last hour or so, and help me cross the line, essentially.”
Mr Hart also collected litter along his Kennet & Avon Canal route and scooped up a few bags of refuse, although he found much of the canal well-maintained.
He said: “I have to say, that stretch of the canal was pristine. The worst areas for litter were when I got to Aldermaston and Theale, where people are.”
