Nick’s happy return

- HOCKEY

NEWBURY & Thatcham men’s 2nd team captain Nick Barrett has expressed his delight at being able to return to some form of action with the hockey club.

Last week, training for teams associated with the club was able to resume after an easing of coronavirus restrictions.

Some of the teams have not played since the end of October and Barrett was relieved they could return in some capacity.

He said: “After such a long break I am personally excited and grateful to get back on to the pitch.

“Over the lockdown we have been running courses and development opportunities via Zoom for coaches and umpires and now is time to put that good learning to use.”

“I think many found this last lockdown much harder so being able to get back to sport I think is vital for people’s mental wellbeing.

“We would encourage anyone looking to take up team sport to come and get involved in our summer programme of events.”

The club won’t be able to play any competitive matches, due to rules from England Hockey, but they can play inter-club friendlies.

“It is disappointing to lose the viability of the league and its remaining fixtures but with the restrictions as they are with travel it was the right decision for the safety of all.

“There will be some good quality, safe opportunities in the next few weeks to continue players’ development and overall just get back to playing fun hockey,” continued Barrett.

The club are hoping for more updates when the next Government announcement comes on Monday.
