Summer fun in town, come rain or shine
BID series of entertainment and attractions to encourage more footfall
...we’re only optimistic that each of our events will encourage more and more footfall into the town centre, and we can’t wait to bring more musical cheer into Newbury
THE Newbury Business Improvement District (BID) has started its Summer Series of events, with a variety of attractions and entertainment in the town centre.
The next event, on Wednesday, August 11, between 10am and 5pm, features local company Jollypop Entertainment, as popular fairytale princesses, to liven the day with songs, parades, shows and meet-andgreet opportunities, as Parkway Shopping shows Disney movies on a big screen.
The Ugly Duckling and City Arts will also run activities in the Market Place, including pottery painting and balloon modelling. All activities, with the exception of the funfair rides erected in the town centre, are free of charge.
On Sunday, August 15, there’s live music in the Market Place between noon and 5pm.
After an award-winning appearance on Channel 4’s Shed of the Year, Disco Shed bring their giant music shed (garden gnomes included) to the Market Place from noon to 5pm. DJs Count Skylarkin and Peepshow Paddy, bring their shed complete with decks, lights, smoke machine, visuals, DIY, and an ever-expanding army of Shedonists.
BID operations director Alison Drummond said: “When we saw the dull weather forecast for the first of our events, we felt slightly apprehensive about the turn-out. There’s no denying; the heavens opened for both of our live music events and the first of our Family Fun Days, which saw Alice and Mad Hatter visit the town centre. However, we were blown away with the commitment of those who remained undeterred by the grizzly weather.
“So much so, there were families with deck chairs enjoying the phenomenal eightpiece jazz band The Sideways Collective, under umbrellas for our day of Jazz and Acoustic Anthems on August 1.
“With this in mind, we’re only optimistic that each of our events will encourage more and more footfall into the town centre, and we can’t wait to bring more musical cheer into Newbury, rain or shine.”
