Fresh start for young performers
Newbury Youth Theatre back with a promise of making exuberant, ambitious drama
FOLLOWING more than a year away, Newbury Youth Theatre will be returning to Arlington Arts from Wednesday, September 15.
Having closed, like most activities, during the first lockdown, NYT started running workshops online and, when it seemed that restrictions might lift last autumn, were on the verge of restarting.
However, given the nature of drama workshops, the shifting restrictions in place at the time limited the range of activities to the point where continuing proved untenable.
The directors explained in a statement: “The impact of lockdowns, bubbles and living under measures to control transmission of the virus is yet to be fully understood. Therefore, we resolved to remain closed until we could be certain of welcoming young people back to an environment that was safe, consistent and could be as free from restrictions as possible.
“That day appears to be on the horizon, so we have decided that it is time to get back to making exuberant, ambitious theatre with young people. If this sounds like something you are interested in (or if you are a former member of our company, itching to return) you are welcome to join us from Wednesday, September 15 (6.30-7.30pm – 11-14s | 7.30-9pm – 15-19s).”
Having started out in the late 80s at the Waterside Centre and having taken up residence at The Arts Workshop, The Corn Exchange and now Arlington Arts, Newbury Youth Theatre are perhaps the longestrunning group of its kind in the area.
Over the years, they have toured regionally and to the Edinburgh
Fringe, where they have established a reputation as one of the most highly respected young companies in the UK.
Directors Amy and Tony TrigwellJones and producer Robin Strapp are all experienced theatre professionals and fully-qualified teachers, affording members the opportunity to develop skills in a structured and supportive environment, while also making work of a high standard.
