Jeffernaul­ts pick up much-needed win

JEFFERNAUL­TS (Fallon Thompson & Andy Jeffery) beat Me & Mini Me (Colin Price & Ray Beeks) 10-6 in Division A of the Newbury Table Tennis League.

Thompson won both her matches three games to nil and Jeffery lost to Beeks in five.

Jeffery won the first two games against Price, but the latter countered strongly and won the match 3-2.

Scorpions B (Duncan Groves & Niall McGrane) overpowere­d Summer Wildcats (Ajai Kamath & Alan Fuller) 12-3.

In a tense contest that went to five games, Groves finally won through against an improved Kamath.

Groves also beat Fuller 3-0 and McGrane beat Kamath 3-1, while in the final match, McGrane beat Fuller 3-1.

In a close match, Hop-son, (Dave Barr & Jonathan Hopson) beat

Woolton Hill Eagles (Antony Baker & Nick Langley) 8-6.

The pivotal match was when Hopson took the first two games off Langley, 13-11 and 12-10, before losing out 3-2.

Barr won his two matches 3-0 and Baker beat Hopson 3-0.

In a clash of two Thatcham teams, Spartans (Dave Wise & Eric Panting) beat Lions 12-2.

David Martin managed to win a game (11-9) off Wise and Jeff Rogers won a game off Panting.

In Division B, Tornadoes (Jason Crawford & Simon Craig) brushed aside Summer Wrens (Vijay Kesarirama­n & Martin Berry) 12-1.

Wrens’ consolatio­n was Berry taking a game off Crawford.

Thatcham Dragons (Ian Whiting & Cliff Robertson) were too strong for Summer Warblers (Daanyal & Zakariya Begg) winning 12-3.

Whiting beat Zakariya 3-0 and

Daanyal 3-1, while Robertson won his two matches 3-1.

In a fascinatin­g match, The Achaeans (Panos & Dimitrios Stemsiotis) preserved their unbeaten form, beating Spitfires (John Panting & Christine Haines) 10-5.

Panos won both his matches 3-1, including a close four-setter against Haines 10-12, 11-8, 11-9, 12-10, while Dimitrios beat Haines 3-0 before losing out to Panting 3-1.

Hop-Son lead Division A with 48 points, followed by RAL (39), Nets & Edges (38) and Spartans (37).

Both Scorpions teams remain very much in the running with Scorpions B on 31 points and Scorpions B with 29 points.

Division B looks to be a two-way contest between Tornadoes, who are currently leading with 50 points, and The Achaeans, who have 42. Spitfires are in second with 45, but they have played six games.
