Youngsters shine in national biathlon

FOUR of Newbury’s aspiring young athletes travelled to the University of Bath at the weekend to take part in the Great British Schools Modern Biathlon Championsh­ips.

Modern biathlon consists of two events – track run and pool swim – and points are awarded for each event.

Sophie Neil of Robert Sandilands Primary School, older brother Liam Neil of St Gabriel’s School, Elodie Burdett also of St Gabriel’s and

Penelope Lyth of Fir Tree Primary School have been battling it out in qualifying events over the last six months to make the ranking list.

Saturday saw Liam compete first, representi­ng the school for Year 7.

He has only recently returned to action following injury and was pleased to finish in 39th position .

Sunday saw the girls compete with Sophie representi­ng Year 4.

She performed well, achieving two new personal bests to finish in 30th place.

Elodie was next for Year 5. She is new to biathlon this year after qualifying on her first attempt to participat­e in the national competitio­n and she also achieved two new personal bests and climbed the rankings to finish in 34th position.

Penelope was last up for the Year 6 group, and she also achieved did well to achieve two new personal bests and finish in eighth place.
