Birch secures silver medal at the British Masters

ABERGELE Harrier Chris Birch secured a silver medal at the British Masters 5k Road Running Championsh­ips in Horwich last weekend.

Taking on the hilly town centre route, Birch finished in 22:35, her fastest-ever time over this particular course having run there previously in 2012 and 2014, to take second place in the FV65 category.

On the same day, three Harriers were at Ellesmere Port for the Sport in the Port 10km road race.

Nick Foden was 105th overall and 47th senior male in a personal best 41:16 (chip: 41:07).

In 157th was Gareth Evans, who clocked 43:05 (chip: 42:54) and John Jones came home 190th overall and 10th MV55 in a PB 44:22 (chip: 44:12).

Last Saturday, Meinir Huws ran the Trail Marathon Wales halfmarath­on, held at Coed y Brenin, in 2:33:50 (chip 2:32:55) to finish 346th overall and 17th FV50.

Diane Jones was 35th in the Denbigh 5km road race last Wednesday in a time of 29:59.

Abergele Mysteruns Richard Borne and John Humphries participat­ed in race 11 of the Joe Brown Midweek Fell-Race series at Tal-y-Mignedd last Tuesday.

In very strong winds and with poor visibility, runners had to ascend some 1,800 ft where they met with very cold temperatur­es. Borne completed the course in a very commendabl­e 48 minutes 54 seconds and Humphries was not too far behind as he posted 50.24.

The same pair tackled the Hotfoot up Famau in Denbighshi­re the following night.

A 3.5-mile fell race, runners faced climbs of 1,400 ft in the first two miles with drastic descents to the finish line. Borne recorded a fine time of 44.35 and Humphries finished strongly to cross the line in a more than respectabl­e 48.27.
