End of era for year 6 children
IWAS, by sheer coincidence, invited to attend three local primary schools last Friday on what was the last day for many of the year-six pupils.
First stop was Ysgol Nant y Coed in Llandudno Junction where I had been invited to present a prize to two pupils, Francesca Roberts and Honey Copland.
They had designed a picture to be used on T-shirts to publicise the around-the-UK bike ride being undertaken by Llandudno resident Steve Foster in order to raise awareness of mental health issues.
Even better was the opportunity to hear year-six pupils sing Calon Lân as part of their final day concert for parents and the rest of the school. They were truly inspirational.
From Nant y Coed I walked over to Ysgol Maelgwn to again meet year-six pupils who had recently enjoyed a school trip to London.
As always the questions about life in Westminster were varied and often penetrating – primary school children are simply not shy and will ask questions that most adults would be embarrassed to ask.
I was particularly impressed by the retention of knowledge the children displayed, not least the names of prime ministers and monarchs which are immortalised in statues across the Parliamentary estate. They had even noticed my very own pigeon hole!
It was also interestingesting to note the variety of schoolshools that pupils at Nantnt y Coed and Maelgwnwn were choosing too attend next academic year.
With Ysgol y Creuddyn, Ysgol John Bright, Ysgol Aberconwy and Eirias all being chosen it shows how lucky parentsts and children in Llandndudno Junction are e to have such a wide choicehoice of good schools for their second- ary education.
The afternoon saw me in Ysbyty Ifan where Welsh Water were donating a cheque to the village hall.
To mark the occasion the senior class at Ysgol Ysbyty Ifan performed a song they had composed themselves which saw them all play the ukulele – 16 of them!
They were superb. The difference between Ysgol Ysbyty Ifan and the two schools in Llandudno Junction was appar apparent in as much as there were only two pupil pupils in year six at Ysb Ysbyty Ifan – both will be attending Ysgol D Dyffryn Conwy n next year.
What was not d different, however, was the enthusiasm of the pupils a at all three schools an and the mixed emotio tion of year-six pupils and their teachers as they camec to the end of their pe period as primary schoolchildren.
