Sion’s boys target cup semi final spot

-

COLWYN Bay will have home advantage for their rearranged Welsh Cricket Cup quarterfinal against Llay Welfare this Sunday.

Last weekend’s scheduled tie at Llay was rained off, so a second attempt to play the game now switches to Penrhyn Avenue.

If Bay get through at the expense of the North Wales League Division One side, they will take on either Cardiff or Blackwood in the semis the following weekend.

Colwyn bounced back from their first league defeat of the season in style last Saturday when they thrashed Maghull by 10 wickets to extend their lead at the Liverpool Competition Division One pinnacle to 50 points.

Home skipper Sion Morris won the toss and inserted the second-placed Liverpool visitors, a decision which proved a successful one.

Left-arm paceman Samad Fallah picked up 5-53 from 16 overs and Paul Jenkins claimed a superb 4-17 off 14 as Maghull were dismissed for just 119.

The second-placed travellers lost their final seven wickets for just 24 runs.

Morris then maintained his marvellous form this season, moving to within two runs of 1,000 in all competitions with an unbeaten 76 as the Bay coasted to 120 without loss off just 14.2 overs.

Fellow opener Zack Gidlow finished 31 not out as the hosts took a 20-1 verdict.

This Saturday sees the Bay aim to build further on their advantage at the peak when they visit St Helens Town.

Colwyn are already in one semi-final after reaching that stage of the Ray Dignam Knockout Trophy last Friday.

Playing away at Division Two side Spring View from the Wigan area in the quarterfinals, Bay were left chasing 159 for victory after the hosts set 158-9 off a reduced 20 overs.

Akbar Rehman dominated for the home team with 100.

Bay were 48-3 for three off 10 (Jordan Evans 26) before the rain meant no further play was possible. The tie was decided on a bowl out and the North Wales visitors were successful. Colwyn now host Leigh in the semis on August 16.
