CONVENT OF MERCY: Nursing Home, Landsowne Road, hold their summer fair on Sat, August 1, 2-4pm. Entertainm­ent from the band Woteva and the Ukulele Band. Various stalls, many prizes. ROTARY: Rotarian Alan Morgan was formally installed as the Club’s Vice President by President John Barker. The meeting continued with a talk by Gordon Nugent. He told the Club that he had attended Durham University which was housed in Newcastle-uponTyne between a pub and a cinema. He spoke about Metals and how for centuries they have been used as protection, for tooling and as a valuable commodity from Roman coins to present gold bullion. Metals are used in the constructi­on industry. He spoke about the properties of metal and the stresses and strains to which it is put. Gordon was thanked for his talk by Rotarian Harry Stanley who hoped he would give the same instructiv­e talk to the Ladies Circle.
