Mixed weekend for high-fliers Mochdre

MOCHDRE’S disappointment at suffering a heavy semifinal defeat in a prestigious T20 event last weekend was no doubt eased by a comfortable victory in the league the previous day.

Gareth Goodson’s side lie third in the North Wales Premier Division after hammering St Asaph by 89 runs last Saturday.

However, things did not go so well when the Welsh team travelled to face Walsall in the ECB National Club Twenty20 West Midlands Area semifinal in Staffordshire.

North Wales T20 champions Mochdre were limited to 137-9 off their 20 overs, Duncan Midgley scoring 45 off 38 balls and Will Evans hitting 37 from 24.

Walsall’s then blitzed the opposition bowling all over the park as they breezed to 143-1 in just 9.4 overs.

Mochdre were in winning touch a day earlier when St Asaph were the visitors to Black Marsh Fields.

Put into bat, the hosts were in trouble on 14-2 before Alex Davies and Matthew Humphreys put on a matchwinning 147 for the third wicket.

Davies, who passed 500 league runs for the season, cracked 91 off 84 balls, including 12 fours and two sixes, while Humphreys scored 55.

It was just as well that pair batted so formidably as the rest of the line-up folded like a pack of cards, Mochdre eventually setting 201-9 in a game reduced to 40 overs per side.

Saints were never at the races as they attempted to concoct the 202 needed for victory, the visitors ending up 112 all out off 27.2, Jason Foulkes best with 40.

Gareth Davies produced fantastic figures of 4-7 off 4.2 overs for the hosts, who dominated the points 14-1. Leftarm paceman Russ Boswell claimed 3-37.

Mochdre will aim to continue their fine progress when they travel to Hawarden Park this Saturday.

Goodson’s men will be determined to repeat their success over the Castlemen back in May, when the winning margin at Black Marsh Fields was 23 runs.

Llandudno upset the odds when they dismissed Connah’s Quay’s mighty batting line-up for just 130 at Central Park – and then went on to celebrate a four-wicket victory.

Tudno won the toss and chose to field, a good decision as Kim Roodt led the way with 4-51 as Quay’s normally ruthless batting ranks crumbled in the face of some cracking away bowling.

Tom Thornton claimed an excellent 3-19 off 5.5 overs and Jack Rimmington grabbed 2-38.

Rhydian Morgan and Sam Rimmington then joint top-scored with 29 apiece as the away side made it to 131-6 off 36.4 overs.

Llandudno enjoyed a 12-3 triumph which moved them up to fifth, with champions Menai Bridge due to visit The Oval this Saturday.
