Glan target success in first home game

-

GLAN Conwy will hope to mark their first home game of the season with a win this Saturday when they host Pwllheli at Cae Ffwt (2.30pm).

The Conwy Valley side were due to visit St Asaph City last night (Wednesday) four days after losing 3-2 in their season’s opener at Glantraeth.

It was a good display from Glan Conwy on Anglesey against a strong team expected to feature among the title challengers this season.

The visitors were on course for a point until a fine late individual goal from Danny Brookwell won it for Glantraeth.

The hosts began well, James Burgess firing just wide before a long punt upfield by keeper Ben Heald had away custodian Rory Crowther in all kinds of trouble before he managed to scoop the ball to safety.

On 10 minutes the home side took the lead as Guto Hughes put a searching delivery in from the right that was met by Gareth Owen, and Burgess jumped highest to head in.

Within a minute a defensive lapse at the other end allowed Mezz Knight to make it 1-1.

Glantraeth pushed hard to regain the lead, Hughes firing narrowly wide on 28 minutes before Crowther went down well to save from Brookwell.

With 10 minutes of the half remaining the Anglesey side went back in front as Owen sent in a long cross from the right and Burgess headed his second by outjumping the keeper.

The away goal was under constant pressure after the break, Crowther concocting a fine save from Brookwell, then only a last-ditch tackle on the same player after a surging run prevented a goal-scoring opportunity.

With only one goal still in it Glantraeth could not relax and Heald impressed in keeping out a Leighton Griffiths’ free kick on 55 minutes, then did even better to thwart the follow-up shot from Kyle Robb with a tremendous flying save.

Glantraeth went close again when a Hughes centre was headed just wide by new signing Mike Lundstram.

On 77 minutes the visitors levelled as Shaun Shannon crossed and Knight volleyed home.

However, that man Brookwell produced a magical clincher nine minutes from time.
