Return of the TILL

Complaints see Asda bring back a manned till

- BY TOM DAVIDSON AND LYDIA MORRIS

SHOPPERS are celebrating after a su p e r ma rk e t announced plans to reinstate a manned till to its checkout area following complaints from customers.

Asda in Llandudno Junction came under fire after it revamped the store’s check-out area at the end of May this year.

The revamp saw just one staffed till operating in the store with the remainder all self-service.

But the move triggered a massive backlash from irate customers who were left frustrated by the modernisation.

An online petition was launched and signed by more than 350 people demanding that Asda reconsider its new design.

Now the firm has performed a spectacular U-turn and decided to install more manned tills in the supermarket on August 23.

Anne Marie Roobottom, who started the online petition, is thrilled by the news.

She said: “Let’s say thank you (to Asda) by supporting them. They are going to make it something of an event on the Monday. Thank you to everyone who signed the petition and made it happen.”

Tracey Birchall, service section leader at the Asda admitted the renovation had lost the store customers and hopes the change in less than two weeks will bring them back.

She said: “A lot of people have stopped coming to our store to avoid the fast lane tills. Even the younger people have told us they don’t like to use them - they’re a lot of hassle.”

“Hopefully this replacement will bring back the customers we’ve lost. Elderly people who don’t see many people through- out the day like the human contact on the tills.

“We like to get to know the customers too.”

She added: “We’ve had a number of people protesting to put the manned tills back. I can understand the frustration - it’s very annoying having to use self-service tills.

“We know how customers feel so we have tried our best to resolve the problem.”

An Asda spokesperson said: “Whilst on the whole customers have embraced the changes, we recognise that there is still room for improvement.

“After listening to customer feedback and a review of the store layout we’ve decided to install one more manned check out in the store – it gives our customers even more choice.
