Player of the week

THIS WEEK: NINA CLEMSON, LLANDUDNO NETBALL CLUB

-

THIS week, instead of a team, we are featuring a Player of the Week.

Answering our questions (with a bit of help from her dad) is Nina Clemson, who is 12 years old and from Colwyn Bay.

She is a pupil at Eirias High School and will be going into Year 8 for this new school term.

Nina used to play with Colwyn Bay NC and won the Player of the Season 2013/14 award in her very first campaign representing the team.

She played in the under-16 age group for her club in that second season and won Player of the Year 2014/15 for the second year in a row.

Nina was awarded Player of the Season for Eirias High School for her first term (Year 7) and has ambitions to be selected for her county subject to potential trials in the coming months.

WHEN did you first start playing netball?

I started playing netball when I was about nine years old at Ysgol Pendorlan.

WHAT club do you play for?

I will be joining Llandudno Netball Club for Season 2015/16 commencing in September, but I have been training with them since April/May 2015.

WHAT position do you play?

I play Centre or on occasions WA (Wing Attack).

I have played other positions as it’s an important part of my coaching, I try most positions but prefer Centre.

HOW often do you practice?

The season is from September till May, and we train every Thursday and play matches every other Wednesday in the local league.

In addition to club training I am also training with the LA Development Hub (Conwy) once a month.

WHICH role models do you look up to in netball?

I have a number of international netballers that I look up to, including Suzy Drane captain of Wales (Nina’s dad asked Suzy on Twitter if she could give Nina any encouraging words she replied “work hard, enjoy the journey and don’t stop until you achieve what you set out to”). Also Jo Harten GS (Goal Shooter) from the England netball squad.

Welsh international netballer Leanne Thomas has been very supportive, and I met her at a recent appearance at John Bright School earlier this year.

WHAT are your aims for the future?

I want to get to the highest level possible which ultimately would be to represent my country.

I would also like to look at qualifying as a netball coach – sports physiotherapist.

WHAT is it that you enjoy about playing netball?

I like playing as part of a team in a game that is fast and competitive.

DO you enjoy any other sports?

My hobbies include playing other sports, in particular football (I’m captain for Conwy Borough FC Under 14 Girls) hockey and also athletics, including the long jump. I love watching football too, especially Liverpool FC.
