Bonus point success keeps Nant Conwy flying high at summit
NANT Conwy extended their lead at the top of Division One North with a comprehensive 40-13 victory at Dolgellau, gaining their third bonus point of the season into the bargain.
In the opening exchanges, Dol opened the scoring when No8 Dylan Llewellyn intercepted a Nant pass to score under the posts with Gerwyn Thomas slotting over the conversion.
Within minutes Nant replied with a fine try by Carwyn Davies, the first of three for the young winger on the afternoon, a successful conversion by Delwyn Jones bringing the scores level.
Two penalties were awarded to Dolgellau within minutes of each other and Thomas put over both to make it 13-7.
Undeterred, the visitors stuck to their game plan and having a purple patch before half time scored a further three tries, one each by Sion Pringle, Robert Parry and Davies, Delwyn Jones converting all three to make it 28-13.
In the second half, despite heroic Dolgellau attacking they were unable to breach the Nant Conwy’s defence and as the team tired, the visitors capitalised by scoring a further two tries through Davies and Carwyn Ellis.
Nant face a tough test this Saturday when they entertain third-placed Llandudno at Pant Carw (1.30pm).
The Conwy Valley side won both league clashes against Tudno last season.
Nant triumphed 17-3 in an end-of-season clash at Maesdu Road, but the lack of a bonus point ended the Pant Carw club’s title hopes.
Last December, Nant saw off their local rivals 26-10 at Trefriw.
Nant finished second last season and Llandudno were fifth.
