MORE than 30 holiday homes are being built as part of a vast project to develop a water sports centre at a former quarry.

The centre has been designed for people to windsurf, canoe or kayak around a lake at Kilvington, near Newark, on the Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire border.

The plans have already been approved after being submitted by Paul Kilmister, 61, of Syston, Leicestershire.

He sold the site last week to a developer called KLPG, which stands for the Kilvington Lodge Park Group.

Freddie

Reid, 29, of KLPG, said: “I have had my eyes on it for the last five years and feel quite privileged. We’ve exchanged on a very big project: a 230acre former quarry. Phase one will be 34 lodges, a hotel and water sports centre.”

Work has already started to build the first nine holiday homes, he said, which will provide “luxurious accommodation”.

Mr Reid, whose offices are in Station Street, Bingham, revealed he hoped to develop the site further in the future.

“My further plans are for 28 unit log cabin village to cater for those that need an extra bit of help and their families with all facilities in one place, so that we can let this beautiful site hit its true potential and put it on the map,” he added.

The water sports centre has got planning permission to be used by nonmotorised boats.

Mr Kilmister said: “The whole site expands to 230 acres. There are four lakes which amount to around 70 acres. The water sports lake is going to be the eastern lake which extends to about 20 acres.

“There will be swimming, boating and non-motorised water sports like canoeing, kayaking and windsurfing – that’s what the planning permission is for.”

Plans for the development were approved by Newark and Sherwood District Council in 2015.

However, a recent application has just been submitted to change a condition in the original plans regarding a traffic-calming scheme, thought to involve the installation of speed limit signs.

And a decision is due to be made to determine this in the coming months.

A Newark and Sherwood District Council spokesman said: “Consultation has been undertaken with the local community and statutory consultees and the application has a target date for decision of October 11, 2018.”
