THE FLY My real-life horror story

- By HANNAH MITCHELL hannah.mitchell@reachplc.com @Hanamitchell

AN Aspley woman is living with hundreds of flies in her house after moving in earlier his year.

Cresta Belshaw, 46, says that no matter how many flies she kills, more reappear the following day and she does not know what to do.

She described the house as being like something out of a Dracula film when she first moved. It seemed to be overrun with maggots, flies, spiders and cobwebs, she said.

“I moved in May and it was full of cobwebs.

“I cleaned it from top to bottom and it was spotless and then, after a few days, the flies started appearing.

“There would be so many of them, they are literally everywhere and when I get rid of them, more appear.

“It is unhygienic for me to be dealing with this amount of flies in the kitchen and the noise from them is also very frustrating.

“It is also worrying because I don’t know where they are coming from.”

Miss Belshaw, moved from Derbyshire to her new house, which is owned by Nottingham City Homes, earlier this year in a mutual exchange.

Nottingham City Homes has said that dealing with flies inside a property is not normally something it would get involved with.

But Miss Belshaw, who is spraying the flies with pest spray every day, thinks the cause should be investigated.

“I keep seeing maggots outside my house and it is making me think that they are attracted to something, maybe under my floorboards. “There could be a dead rat under there or something. Something needs to be done. Living with them is becoming unbearable. I just want to make this house my home.”

Miss Belshaw says she is constantly having to clean up dead flies from her windowsill and uses a vacuum cleaner around the house most days.

“Some of the flies are meat flies, which means they are a lot bigger than normal flies, I just don’t understand it and I need to get rid of them at the source but I can’t afford to pay £400 for pest control when the problem is something I can’t control or could have been here before I moved in.” Nottingham City Homes is set to visit her on Wednesday to investigate the problem. A spokeswoman said: “Ms Belshaw has reported her concerns to us and we have an appointment to visit her property on Wednesday to look at the issue.”

A spokesman for Nottingham City Council said: “Our pest control team don’t treat for common house pests like spiders and flies but can provide advice to residents.”
