Why fall out over burka comments?
FURTHER to the brouhaha concerning Boris Johnson and the wearing of the burka, perhaps we should remember that we are a country of free speech and that wars have been fought to preserve this precious commodity.
The English writer Evelyn Beatrice Hall once wrote: “I do not agree with what you say, but I will defend to my death your right to say it”.
Is it possible that in this age of political correctness we are all becoming just a little too sensitive?
Many years ago I knew the purser of the British-india ship Nevasa who would explain his ability to survive the daily passenger complaints by saying, “I have a tube which enters my left ear and leaves by my right ear”.
Perhaps we should all develop a tube and accept that there are many opinions and each person is entitled to his, or hers, without creating offence. Colin Bower
