Key elements of riverside dream

An ambitious dream for the future of Nottingham’s Waterside area is revealed today in a document outlining what the city council wants from developers MATTHEW BUNN reports

QUALITY AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY KEY IN PROPOSALS FOR HOUSING

THE Waterside development would boost the housing stock in Nottingham, with four projects in that area – including one known as Trent Basin – having already been approved.

The demand from planners is that the homes - which will likely be a mix of family properties and apartments – are of a high quality. They must also be energyefficient and include “affordable” properties.

No set number of houses has yet been confirmed in the master plan for the area, as this will depend on the house types and the mix of uses across the site.

However, Nottingham City Council is clear that the houses will need to be of a contemporary appearance and that they will attract people who like the idea of living near to a city and in a “sustainable neighbourhood”.

New streets and routes is also one of the key areas that will need to be addressed in a redevelopment of the area.

Waterside is sandwiched between the River Trent to the south and Daleside Road to the north.

There are two key routes in the area: London Road (the A60) which lies to the west of the Waterside area and passes Meadow Lane stadium, and Daleside Road (the A612) to the north.

Regenerating this area of the city is a priority for the council and, as part of this, funding has been secured to improve the connection with the centre.

In order to improve this connectivity, improvements could be made to several key junctions and there is potential to create new junctions as well.

The improvements highlighted in the document include two on Daleside Road, three along Meadow Lane and one at London Road, on the junction with Cattle Market Road.
