FIRST ATTEMPT ON GIRL WITH RARE CONDITION FAILED
A Four-year-old is facing another eye operation to create a new socket after the last one proved unsuccessful.
Myah Hauxwell, of Mansfield Woodhouse, was born with a rare genetic condition called micropthalmia, also known as small eye syndrome.
She has had more than 10 operations on her face and eye, and was previously using a prosthetic eye given to her by the NHS.
Myah’s latest trip to hospital was to have an operation to create an eye socket for her using body fat from her stomach.
The procedure aimed to prevent her face from becoming deformed as she grows.
But the operation proved unsuccessful and Myah has now developed growths on her eye. Surgeons were not able to place enough fat in her socket.
She must now have another major operation – her second in six months – on December 7 to remove the growths.
Doctors will try to add more fat to the socket again.
Mum Lauren, a 31-year-old beautician, is taking time off during her busi-
est time of the year to care for Myah.
She is fundraising so she can still provide for her family despite having no income while away from work.
She said: “The operation wasn’t successful so she’s having another one.
“We were hoping it was going to be but she has now had growths forming on her eyes which need to be removed.
“Each body responds differently and she just happened to reject it on this occasion.
“She has lots of growths forming on her eyes which creates a lot of fluid and can be really irritating for her.
“It can be very uncomfortable for her but she complains about absolutely nothing and she is so strong.
“I’m having to take time off work to look after her. It’s the busiest time over Christmas for me and I won’t have any income so I’m trying to fundraise to help.”
On October 28, Mansfield Rugby Club is holding an “fight night” which will raise funds for the Hauxwells.
