GUYS AND DOLLS

Derby

GUYS And Dolls was ranked in the Top 10 of Rolling Stone magazine’s best musicals of all time and tops Entertainment Weekly’s list of the greatest musicals. And it’s the latest production by Good Companions Stage Society at Derby Theatre from November 6 to 10.

“Put plainly, it’s a masterpiece,” says Gary Rowley, who recently joined the society.

“Upon its release on Broadway, it won five

Tony Awards, including

Best Musical, with the ‘92 revival taking home a further four Tony Awards.

In 1955 it became the motion picture that most are familiar with, starring Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra, and it picked up the best motion picture award at the Golden Globes.”

It’s the tale of Nathan Detroit, who needs a small fortune to keep his permanent floating card game going – but he is running out of luck and time. Nathan thinks all his problems have been solved when he makes a rigged bet with highroller Sky Masterson to take a “doll” to Havana. The “doll” in question is uptight evangelist Sarah Brown.

The musical, Damon Runyon’s famous tale of small-time hoods and showgirls, moves from the bustle of Times Square to the dance clubs of Havana. Songs include Luck Be A Lady, I’ve Never Been In Love Before and Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ The Boat.

DOCTOR FAUSTUS

Derby

IT is the story of the man who sold his soul to the devil.

Faustus is a brilliant but bored academic and scholar who believes he has exhausted the confines of human knowledge. Frustrated with the futility of law and science, he is hungry for something new and falls under the spell of the dark arts.

Derby Shakespeare Theatre Company presents Christopher Marlowe’s The Tragical History Of The Life

And Death Of Doctor Faustus at the Guildhall Theatre next month.

Marlowe’s most famous play considers the battle between good and evil, the merits of Hell over Heaven and asks whether faith alone is enough to save a soul.

It’s a modern interpretation with a strippeddown text that runs at the theatre in Derby’s Market Place from November 6 to 10.

Performances are at 8pm with a talk, You, Me And Faustus, at 7.30pm before the first performance on Tuesday, November 6, where you can meet the production team, hear the story of how they translated the text for the stage and ask questions about the creative process.

■■ Tickets are £13.50 with concessions at £11.50 from derbylive.co.uk or call 01332 255800.
