BLACK HOLLYWOOD: “THEY’VE GOTTA HAVE US”

Tonight, BBC2, 9pm

WHEN Moonlight was named Best Picture at the 2017 Oscars, it was the first film with an all-black cast to take the prize – becoming a symbol for black cinema. It’s the starting point for this three-part series looking at how black actors and filmmakers have gone from being side-lined to wielding real power in Hollywood. In episode one, Harry Belafonte (91, who was recently seen in Spike Lee’s Blackkklas­man), Earl Cameron (101) and Diahann Carroll (83) talk about their experience­s of being pioneers in a white world.

DOCTOR WHO

Tomorrow, BBC1, 6.55pm THE Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) and her new friends have barely had a chance to recover from their first adventure together before they are plunged into another – which takes Graham, Ryan and Yasmin on their first journey to an alien planet. The unlikely travelling companions are faced with a struggle for survival as they try to solve the mystery at the heart of this strange, dangerous new world.

AUTUMNWATC­H NEW ENGLAND

Monday, BBC2, 8pm

EVERY year the leaves of six billion trees across New England turn into a riot of yellows, reds and golds, and Chris Packham, Michaela Strachan and Gillian Burke have travelled to New Hampshire to beam this phenomenon back to the UK. They also introduce viewers to wildlife including moose, black bears, bobcats and beavers, as well as the more familiar red foxes, red and grey squirrels and deer.

THE GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF

Tuesday, Channel 4, 8pm IT’S Danish Week, and the bakers face unfamiliar recipes

as they battle to impress the judges. There’s a bread challenge Signature, where they must demonstrat­e style as well as substance. Paul Hollywood sets a spherical Technical – and with a place in the semi-final at stake, everyone is out to impress him and Prue Leith. For their final challenge, the bakers must deliver an elaborate pastry Showstoppe­r fit for a Danish birthday party.

WITHOUT LIMITS: AUSTRALIA

Wednesday, BBC1, 8pm FOLLOWING the critically acclaimed series Without Limits: Vietnam, and to mark the 2018 Invictus Games in Sydney, this twopart observatio­nal

documentar­y sees a team of injured British and Australian veterans embark on an extraordin­ary 1,000-mile expedition across the Kimberley, the northernmo­st of Western Australia’s nine regions. The Kimberley is three times larger than England but with a population of less than 40,000, and the team’s route follows the Gibb River Road, an old stock route of mostly unpaved road.

THE BIG BANG THEORY

Thursday E4, 8.30pm IT ALL started with a big bang, but now fans are coming up with theories about how the hit US sitcom will end as it’s been announced that this 12th season will be the last. It may seem like Sheldon already has his happy Sheldon and Amy in The Big Bang Theory ending after marrying Amy at the end of the last run, but in this opening episode, their honeymoon is about to go awry. Meanwhile, Penny and Leonard discover they have a disturbing amount in common with Amy’s parents, and Raj gets caught in a social media storm after insulting astrophysi­cist Neil degrasse Tyson.

INVICTUS GAMES 2018

Friday, BBC1, 7.30pm IT’S been a big year for Prince Harry, but he and his new wife are still heading to Australia for the Invictus Games, which the royal helped launch in 2014. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex aren’t the only ones making the trip, with Alex Jones and JJ Chalmers in Sydney to preview the competitio­n, which gets under way on Saturday. They find that the Games has gone from strength to strength, and that more than 500 injured, ill and wounded military personnel from 18 countries will be taking part this year. The presenters also talk to members of the UK team to hear their stories and learn more about how sport has helped to transform their lives.
