Investigation into another inmate death at the prison
AN investigation will be launched following the death of an inmate at ‘dangerous’ Nottingham Prison.
Robert Frejus, 29, died at the category B prison in Perry Road on October 9, a spokesman for the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) confirmed.
The MOJ has released no further details, but in a statement said: “Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
“As with all deaths in custody there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.”
The prison, in Sherwood, has been heavily criticised in the last year, with inspectors in May describing it as ‘dangerous, disrespectful and drug-ridden’.
Peter Clarke, HM Chief Inspector of Prisons, invoked the first use of a new ‘urgent notification’ protocol following the findings of the inspection.
This requires the Secretary of State for Justice, publicly, to take personal responsibility for improving a jail with significant problems.
At the time, the Ministry of Justice told the Post a number of measures had been put in place in an attempt to make improvements.
This included double induction time for new staff, putting in place a new violence reduction strategy, a drugs strategy review, the recruitment of specialist substance misuse officers and risk assessment interviews and key workers to support vulnerable prisoners.”
