Drive-thru plans for the ‘mini-city’

STARBUCKS AND NANDO’S SET SIGHTS ON TOWN

- By MATTHEW BUNN

A NEW Nando’s restaurant and Starbucks drive-thru could be on their way to Netherfield.

The national chains want to create two new venues on part of the Morrisons car park next to the Victoria Retail Park.

A planning application submitted on behalf of the two companies shows the new development, if granted, would be created on the northern end of the car park, next to Victoria Park Way.

It would include a 348sq m unit for the Nando’s restaurant and a 167 sq m building for the Starbucks, as well as 23 parking spaces to serve the two venues.

Councillor John Clarke, councillor for Netherfield and leader of Gedling Borough Council, previously said the area would become a “mini city” due to large housing developments.

Other chains, such as Frankie and Benny’s,

KFC, TK Maxx and M&S, are already in the area. Councillor Clarke said: “There should be a few jobs there and if you look at some of the other restaurants around the place, people seem to like it. With the coffee houses, they have taken over from the pubs.

“They are all good family places. People go there and they are reasonably costed so I would welcome it. And those jobs that do come out of it, I hope they are distributed in the Netherfield and Sneinton areas.”

The application states: “The proposed uses will generate a significant number of job opportunities for local people across both full and part-time roles and the economic and employment benefits of the proposals should be afforded significant weight in the assessment of the proposals.”
