How could referendum be last word on Brexit?

-

RUTH Gager (Opinion, September 20 and October 8) seems to want Brexit to happen without any scrutiny or opportunity for the British people to change their mind.

If Brexit is truly the will of the people, what do we have to fear from a vote on the deal?

I don’t see how people can claim the 2016 referendum should be the last word on the process, when no one knew at the time what Brexit would look like.

We still don’t really know what the final deal will be, but the impact on trade and jobs is becoming clearer.

Government predictions published this year show a negative effect for all regions, under all scenarios over 15 years.

The Bank of England has said that Brexit has already knocked 2 percent off the UK economy, worth £900 to each household.

Seeing that the Electoral Commission have said that Vote Leave overspent the spending limit, and the claims of leavers during the campaign have been discredited, the mandate of the referendum looks increasingly dilapidated.

We should also bear in mind that more than 1.4 million young people will have become eligible to vote since the referendum.

Even Jacob Rees Mogg, arch Brexiter, has admitted it will be 50 years before we can judge whether Brexit has been a success.

These 18 and 19-year-olds will have to live with the consequences of Brexit much longer than the rest of us.

It would be a pretty shoddy democracy that denies them a say on their future.

Redhill THE “People” have already voted to leave

When will it end? The Brexit debate continues with endless educated idiots demanding a People’s Vote on Brexit.

Well, for all those away on holiday, ill, or too idle to vote etc at the time, we had a referendum on the June 23, 2016. The result was 51.89 percent Leave, 48.11 percent Remain in the European Union, on a turnout of 72.2 percent. So, 27.8 percent of the electorate could not be bothered to vote.

Why has the demand for a second People’s Vote suddenly

become a big deal when we, the People have already voted? We do not have two separate votes at a general election why a second referendum vote and why use the word “People’s”? Animals or any other creature, as far as is known, do not vote! Wilf Doe St Albans Road Arnold
