Fire-hit takeaway returns with a new menu

-

A POPULAR takeaway destroyed by fire is set to reopen after a £150,000 makeover.

As well as a brand new look, Jerk Kitchen, in Woodthorpe, will have a new menu which now includes Jamaican-style Sunday dinners.

The fire-ravaged takeaway has been closed since February. Extensive damage was caused to the property in Mansfield Road after a barbecue range caught fire.

Flames spread into the roof void on the first floor, damaging the joists.

Owners Anthony Newton and Andrew Mcgregor were devastated by the destruction after building the business up from scratch just over three years ago.

The interior of the takeaway, which opens at noon today, was ripped out and new kitchen equipment has been installed.

The barbecue has gone, so there will be no danger of a repeat blaze. Instead, food will be cooked in a digital combi-oven, making it quicker and more consistent.

A new menu has all the old favourites such as rice and peas and curried mutton but has been extended to offer jerk burgers, salt and pepper chicken, tiger prawns and salmon.

Desserts have been added, such as sticky toffee pudding, apple crumble and Jamaican favourite - rum cake.

Also new are Jamaican Sunday dinners, inspired by the meals Anthony’s grandma used to cook. Customers can order half a roast chicken, lamb shank or mutton accompanied by rice and peas, roast potatoes, carrots, kale, broccoli and pot of gravy.

Anthony said: “After the fire happened, and then Covid, we have done so well to keep afloat. Getting hold of materials was really really challenging but we managed to beg and borrow and did a lot of the work ourselves.”
