Data breaks down areas by prosperity

MANSFIELD AND ASHFIELD RANK IN TOP 150 CONSTITUENCIES FOR DEPRIVATION LEVELS

TWENTY small neighbourhoods across Mansfield and Ashfield have been ranked among the highest levels of deprivation in the country.

This is according to new data published by the House of Commons Library, which breaks down areas of individual constituencies to show the prosperity of individual communities.

The data ranks constituencies across England from one to 533 on their levels of deprivation - with one being the most deprived and 533 being the least.

Issues such as employment and crime rates are looked at to work out how each area compares in specific brackets, including education, income and health deprivation.

All of the issues looked at to conclude the listing are: education, skills and training; health deprivation and disability; crime; living environment; employment; barriers to housing and services; and income.

The constituencies are then given an overall ranking based on their score, with income and employment brackets carrying the most weight.

Both Mansfield and Ashfield rank in the top 150 constituencies for deprivation levels, with Mansfield’s ranking slightly lower than neighbouring Ashfield.

The data also breaks down constituencies by Lower Layer Super Output Areas (LSOAS), small areas inside constituencies used for data such as this. These areas do not have specific names, but a map outlines the roads and streets inside the individual LSOA brackets and these have been used to give an idea of where the LSOAS are based.

The Post has evaluated the data for both Mansfield and Ashfield to see how the constituencies rank.

The Mansfield constituency and district ranks as 117th in the country for its levels of deprivation, with 10 of its LSOAS featuring on the mostdeprived ranking.

This equates to around 15 percent of the areas listed in the House of Commons document. Broken down by the individual criteria, Mansfield’s ‘living environment’ and ‘barriers to housing and service’ rank among the lesser-deprived in the country - ranking 365th and 323rd respectively.

However, in terms of “education, skills and training”, the district ranks 62nd in the country and is among the most deprived for this bracket.

The income and employment domains – which carry the highest weight of all the criteria evaluated – are also closer to the “more deprived” ranking. Mansfield’s employment is ranked 88th in the country for the highest rate of deprivation, while income comes in at 155th place.

And in terms of its LSOAS, 10 areas were provided with a one out of 10 (most deprived ranking), while just two areas gained a 10 out of 10 ranking. The areas in the constituency with the highest rank of deprivation (1 out of 10 ranking) are:

West area; Church Street/clumber Street area (Market Warsop); Jubilee Way North/jubilee Way South area (Oak Tree); Newgate Lane/sandy Lane area; Oak Tree Lane/eakring Road area; Oxclose Lane/lawrence Avenue area (Mansfield Woodhouse); Ravensdale Road/sherwood Hall Road area; Sutton Road/quarry Lane area.

The areas in the constituency with the lowest ranks of deprivation (8-10 out of 10) are:

Similarly to Mansfield’s overall ranking, the Ashfield constituency’s overall grade in the country comes in at 139th out of 553.

Ashfield also recorded 10 areas with the 1 out of 10 ranking for deprivation, which equates to around 16 percent of areas in the constituency being ‘highly deprived’.

Broken down by the individual criteria, Ashfield’s ‘education, skills and training’ ranks as 63rd out of 533 in the ‘more deprived’ category - one place better than neighbouring Mansfield.

However, the constituency’s ‘barriers to housing and services’ is among the best in the country - ranking 505th out of 533 overall and coming in as ‘least deprived’.

But the criteria which carries the most weight in determining the overall ranking - income and employment - are further down the list and closer to ‘more deprived’.

The constituency - which includes Sutton-in-ashfield, Kirkby-in-ashfield, the rural areas like Selston, Eastwood and surrounding areas - ranks 111th for employment deprivation.

And its income ranks at 156th overall - again one place better off than neighbouring Mansfield.

Of the 10 areas which have a 1 out of 10 ranking for highest deprivation levels, seven of these LSOAS are in Sutton-in-ashfield, with a further three recorded in Kirkby-in-ashfield.

Only one area across the entire constituency ranked 10 out of 10 and ‘least deprived’, in Brinsley, while just three other areas gained an 8 out of 10 ranking. None of the most or least deprived areas in the constituency were recorded in Eastwood.

The areas in the constituency with the highest rank of deprivation (1 out of 10 ranking) are: Fackley Road/ Thoresby Crescent area (Stanton Hill/sutton-in-ashfield); St Mary’s Road/highfield Road area (Carsic/ Sutton-in-ashfield); Lammas Road/ Carsic Lane area (Sutton-in-ashfield); High Pavement/station Street area (Sutton-in-ashfield); Priestic Road/davies Avenue area (Suttonin-ashfield/carsic); Outram Street/ Stoney Street area (Sutton-in-ashfield); Leamington Drive/clare Street area (Sutton-in-ashfield); Lowmoor Road/beacon Drive area (Kirkby-in-ashfield); Welbeck Street/lowmoor Road area (Kirkbyin-ashfield); Southwell Lane/elm Tree Road area (Kirkby-in-ashfield).

The areas in the constituency with the lowest ranks of deprivation (8-10 out of 10) are:

Brinsley Hill/windsmoor Road area (Brinsley) - 8 out of 10 ranking

King’s Mill Road East/redbarn Way areas (Sutton-in-ashfield) - 10 out of 10 ranking; Sutton Road/wentworth Road area (Kirkby-in-ashfield) - 8 out of 10 ranking; Sherwood Way South/derby Road area; (Sutton-in-ashfield) - 8 out of 10.
