Surgeons save the eyesight of Forest legend

ROUTINE OPTICIAN CHECK-UP REVEALS A DETACHED RETINA

A ROUTINE eye test led to emergency surgery to save the sight in an eye of one of Nottingham Forest’s all-time top goalscorers.

Ian Storey-moore played as a striker, scoring 105 league goals for Forest in 236 appearances from 1962 until 1972.

He went on to join Manchester United, scoring 11 goals in 39 appearances, and received an England cap in 1970.

The Forest legend, now 75, went to attend an annual eye test in a Specsavers in Bingham and was told he needed to go to hospital right away, despite reporting no issues with his eyesight.

Mr Storey-moore said: “We’ve been going to Specsavers in Bingham since it opened three years ago.

“After Amit (the optician) had carried out the eye examination, he thought I might have a detached retina and so rang the hospital right away. It was a bit of a shock!

“I’m just so grateful to Amit and to Specsavers. If it hadn’t been for that routine appointment and Amit’s expertise, I could have lost the sight in my eye.”

Amit’s suspected diagnosis of a detached retina was confirmed when Mr Storey-moore arrived at the Queen’s hospital, Nottingham, later that day.

He had surgery, under local anaesthetic, to repair the tear and was discharged a few days later.

The optician had carried out an OCT scan, which uses light to take more than 1,000 images of the back of the eye and beyond, looking right back to the optic nerve and creating a cross-section view.

Amit said: “Using the OCT meant I could look deeper into Ian’s eye to get an accurate picture of their structures and ultimately help identify the issue.

“The added benefit of the scan is that we can store the customer’s OCT images so they can note changes over time – a real benefit to the monitoring of someone’s overall eye health.

“We’re delighted to hear that Ian has made a swift recovery.

“Stories like his do show the importance of seeing your optician regularly, and of course of making an appointment right away if you notice any changes to your vision or experience any problems.”
