CALL FOR ACTION AFTER LATEST FLY-TIPPING INCIDENT AT TOWN’S DUMPING HOTSPOT

- By JOSEPH LOCKER joseph.locker@reachplc.com @joelocker96

A STREET in Stapleford is being used as a rubbish dump by fly-tippers “at least once a week”, according to a local councillor.

Independent councillor for Stapleford Richard Macrae says Mathews Court has been used by fly-tippers since he has been in his role.

However, he told the Post it has become even worse, including a severe case of fly-tipping on Monday.

“I feel people are just dumping there because they know the council will take it, but if I do nothing people will ask why the council isn’t doing anything,” he said.

“I think some of the people that live round here know who is doing it.

“Someone who sees them should report it so we can catch them, because it is not getting removed for free.

“There is a cost. That is money that could be spent improving a local park.

“Lots of people use social media to advertise for a person with a van, but there is a small minority that will take your rubbish and dump it down an alleyway.

“The incident on Monday looked like half a house clearance. We have had a woman who used a man with a van who dumped it in a hedge somewhere, and her address was found in the rubbish, so she was taken to court and fined.

“I have been reporting this location since I’ve been a councillor. It is every week and it is getting worse.”

Mathews Court was used by fly-tippers on Monday to dump a large number of items such as fridges, two chairs, a mattress and a sofa. An exercise machine and cushions were also found abandoned in the area.

Austen Blakemore, who has lived in Stapleford for around 10 years, said: “It is disgraceful.

“I don’t think the council do enough to press charges. If I have an old sofa I can dump it on the pavement outside my house and the council will come and pick it up. It is this mindset people have.

“The people that do it need to be made an example of. We have got people who just empty their house and put it on the street and the council will come along and tidy it all up. No-one gets done for it.

“I would like to see cameras put up and I would like to see a dedicated billboard put up showing someone fly-tipping, showing who they are looking for.”

A Broxtowe Borough Council spokeswoman added: “The council is aware that there have been a number of incidents in this area and is working to tackle this type of antisocial behaviour so we can ensure that Broxtowe is and clean and green place.”
