Pointless car permit schemes mystery

-

I TOO have noticed how so many roads around the QMC have now become residents permit parking only even when there was no evidence that it is actually needed. Mr Singh (“Baffling desperation over parking permits”, Opinion, November 11) is spot on with his comments that the city council are not smart enough to realise how much damage their controversial anti-car policies are doing to our city.

In the past few days the council have erected signage on Kingsbury Drive in Aspley for the highly controversial new residents’ permits scheme. In the last eight weeks I have NEVER seen any situation that warranted all-day restrictions on this road and on 10 adjacent roads. .

I was one of many people who would have objected to this pointless scheme but because the official consultation was held during the summer holidays I did not get to hear about it in time. I have recently seen the FOI documents released by the council from the consultation. It is shocking to read that a mere eight people out of more than 300 properties actually wrote to request the permit scheme and almost three times as many (22 letters) wrote official objections. And on no less than eight of the roads that now have permit schemes there is not a single person known to want it.

During these difficult times how can the city council justify wasting about £30k on a pointless scheme when there is zero evidence of any all-day problems and it will cause significant inconvenience to so many people. This is certainly not how most people except a competent democratic organisation to behave.
