FAREWELL TO FAITHFUL FRIENDS

As the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge reveal the passing of their pet, looks at some other famous dog lovers

THE Maharaja of Junagad kept upwards of 800 dogs at the beginning of the last century and they enjoyed a life of luxury with their own private rooms and servants and a British vet to tend to them.

He would hold wedding and birthday parties for his favourites and dress them in evening jackets and Chopin’s Funeral March was played whenever a dog died.

PEMBROKE Welsh corgi Dookie was the first of many corgis owned by the British royal family and was bought by George VI as a present for his daughters Margaret and Elizabeth, left. Fellow corgi Jane joined the royal household three years later. They were the first of more than 30 corgis owned by the Queen during her lifetime. 1

WILLIAM and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, announced the death of their beloved pet dog Lupo on Instagram saying he had been “at the heart of our family”. The nine-yearold black cocker spaniel was a wedding present from Kate’s brother James and was known to enjoy getting involved in family games of ping pong.

WHITE House dog Spot, left, was the family pet of US President George W Bush. The English Springer Spaniel loved playing on the South Lawn of the White House and was the offspring of Millie, who was former US President George H. Bush’s dog. Spot passed away in 2004 at the age of 15.

KING Charles Spaniel Dash was the childhood companion of Queen Victoria and was given a marble effigy when he died in 1840. It was engraved with the words: “His attachment was without selfishnes­s. His playfulnes­s without malice.”

MY FAIR LADY star Audrey Hepburn had a Yorkshire terrier called Mr Famous. He appeared with her in a scene in 1957 movie Funny Face and often joined her on magazine covers. He sadly perished in a road accident while Audrey was filming The Children’s Hour in 1961.

HOLLYWOOD star Doris Day was a life-long dog lover and animal rights campaigner and set up a foundation to help animals. Her three rescue dogs were with her when she died last year at the age of 97. The Calamity Jane star once said: “I have found that when you are deeply troubled, there are things you get from the silent devoted companions­hip of a dog that you can ger from no other source”.

AMERICA’S first president George Washington was a confirmed dog lover and had 10 of different breeds. They went by names like Tipsy, Drunkard, Madame Moose and Sweet Lips. Sweet Lips was one of his favourites and joined him when he attended the first Continenta­l Congress in 1774.

AMERICAN actor Will Rogers, who began his career in silent movies, was a life-long life-lo animal lover love and once on declared: d “If there are no dogs in heaven, then when I die I want to go where they the went”.

A STATUE of famous Skye Terrier Greyfriars Bobby was erected in Edinburgh in 1873 – a year after the little dog’s death. He reportedly mourned the death of his owner, a police night watchman, for 14 years and movies and books have been written about his unswerving loyalty.
