Blame human rights for bad behaviour
THE letter of Brian George (“How many times do they have to be told?”, Opinion, January 12) Tony
Morris’s contribution (“People flouting rules are idiots and scum”, Opinion, January 12) and Ivan Gould’s letter (“Visitor restrictions too little, too late”, Opinion, January 12) – all three letters are linked by a common origin!
These correspondences made a compelling read in the Post with their alert observations of folk in Covid-19 society.
At this juncture; I should like to add my appraisal to what’s caused an antisocial attitude, as there’s a generation growing up with a dismissive opinion of others in their social sphere.
Such individuals’ mentality is, “couldn’t care less”. We must examine how hostility to other people has manifested.
To analyse the problem isn’t difficult. Start by thinking of the political direction the country’s taken, since 1945. Then consider the composition of each government’s aims, and how a general theme evolved over decades.
The common origin is neoliberalism, handing down softer deterrents to wrongdoers. Then came, equality and human rights! The legislation triggered an unwanted shenanigans in society.
Hence elements of all age brackets are convinced rules don’t apply to them as they claim to know their rights, and you can’t tell them what to do!
It’s been predicted that the authorities would rue the day they instigated equal rights, beyond equal pay and conditions for women when they were in comparable situation to men! Now equality has turned into a farce, where respect for authority is non-existent.
Hence a stratum of the population see themselves as superior beings, over and above law enforcement personnel!
Equality and rights were never intended in this context! Those inconsiderate individuals think equality-rights signify they’ve got carte blanche to do whatever, without consequence.
Return to; the visitor restriction too little, too late; letter. The Government didn’t close our borders as they thought to deny access into the country violated the Human Rights Convention. The borders were closed once it became apparent other countries were circumnavigating the convention!
