‘Race track’ car park to be shut at night
MORRISONS’ car park in Bulwell will now be closed at night due to “dangerous and inconsiderate drivers” using it as a race track, police have confirmed.
Officers say drivers use the car park in Leen Drive as an overnight meeting place, leading to numerous complaints by people living close by.
Fed-up residents previously told the Post how revving engines and screeching tyres have become their nightly soundtrack due to the meet-ups.
They said the issue, which had been going on for years, had “exploded” last summer in particular.
Gates giving access to Morrisons and Springfield Retail Park will now be closed off every night to the public.
A spokesperson for Bulwell Police said: “After receiving multiple complaints from residents in relation to vehicles causing issues in Morrisons car park in Bulwell, it has been decided that the gates giving access to Morrisons and Springfield Retail
Park will be closed nightly with immediate effect.
“The timings will vary but it will be after the store has closed every evening.
“This has been brought about because of the inconsiderate and dangerous behaviour of a minority of drivers who think it is acceptable to use the car park as a race track and a meeting place to show off their cars and cause noise nuisance.
“I urge all users of the car parks to be aware of the changes of access as we do not wish to see people getting locked in and having to walk home.
“If you are part of a car group then please pass this on to your members.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Morrisons for their support in getting the changes implemented.”
The supermarket giant previously said it was working with local authorities to resolve the issue.
Residents had also raised concerns over the legality of some of the modifications made to the cars, due to the 74-decibel legal limit on car exhausts, which many feel was exceeded by many of the cars who attended the meet-ups.
