Weaver: Why Calvin allowed to join Notts

-

HARROGATE Town boss Simon Weaver says Calvin Miller has joined Notts County on loan because his chances of first-team football are going to be “limited”.

The former Celtic attacker joined the Magpies on loan earlier this week, a decision that was not universally popular with Town supporters given his performances this season.

He has played 13 times in League Two already this term and scored his first league goal for the club in a 1-0 victory against Mansfield Town earlier in the campaign.

While some Town fans have questioned the decision to let him leave, Weaver said there was a need to trim down the squad numbers at Wetherby Road, which will also help lighten the financial burden too.

“Calvin needs matches and we can’t guarantee him them at the moment,” the Town boss told the Harrogate Advertiser.

“He’s had some good games for us, he’s looked very bright at times, he’s got that turn of pace and a great left foot, but with the signings we have made in this transfer window, his chances are going to be limited going forward.

“We are looking to the future and that means that we have to try and balance the squad both in terms of numbers and finances, so some of the lads have had to go out.”

While Miller arrived at Meadow Lane on Monday, he saw Harrogate team-mate Tom Walker move back in the opposite direction after his deal ended at Meadow Lane.

Notts wanted to keep the former Fylde winger and Weaver has confirmed that he is still free to leave the club amid rumours Stockport County are interested in signing him.

Weaver said: “Tom has come back to us but he is available to go out and get some games elsewhere.

“With a loan, it’s got to be right for the player. Notts County wanted Tom to stay with them, he didn’t get sent back.

“He did fine there. “However, the lad made the decision that he wanted to return to us, so now he’ll train here and fight for a place.”
