‘When it snows we don’t even think about taking the car out of the drive’

‘NIGHTMARE’ WEATHER FOR RESIDENTS OF CITY’S STEEPEST STREETS

FAMILIES living on some of the city’s steepest hills have spoken of the “nightmare” conditions caused by the heavy snowfall over the weekend.

Snow began to fall across Nottinghamshire early in the afternoon on Sunday and, within the space of a few hours, the roads had become extremely hazardous, none more so than Marshall Hill Drive and Kenrick Road in Mapperley.

Residents have previously spoken of the dangers of travelling up the hills during the winter – and they described the conditions of the roads and pavements, which were covered with up to five inches of snow.

Civil servant Anish Gupta, who has lived in Kenrick Road for the past 15 years, said: “We saw the gritter come down and it started snowing, but it just kept snowing and then eventually the road was covered.

“A few cars did try to do it. I saw a 4x4 try to go up the hill but they must have panicked and tried to do a three-point-turn halfway up.

“People get really, really terrified – but turning sideways when it snows will cause you to slide.

“There is nothing more terrifying.

“When it snows we do not even think about taking the car out of the drive.

“It has been crazy but by this morning the road was clear again. But the pavement is a nightmare.

“For a change there have not been any accidents.

“Kenrick Road is the only one that gets gritted. So all the others were covered in snow. We just get

used to it. We usually get one or two days a year like this.”

Marlene Bramman, who lives in Kenrick Road with husband Ken, said: “I saw a few cars go past our house yesterday and reverse back up.

“You cannot get down in this weather. It is best to stay indoors. The road has cleared now.”

Another Mapperley resident, Ryan Woods, managed to capture a picture of cars attempting to get up Marshall Hill Drive on Sunday evening.

He said: “We saw two cars get up successfully and one car didn’t.”

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for ice yesterday, which was in effect until 10am this morning and some bus services were delayed or diverted as a result of the adverse weather.

Highways England said it was very busy as a result of the number of incidents on roads such as the M1, while train services were also affected.
