STREET SHOCKED BY FIRE ON DOORSTEP
POLICE LAUNCH ARSON INVESTIGATION
RESIDENTS of a street in Basford have said they are worried after an arson investigation was launched at one of the properties.
In the early hours of yesterday police and fire crews were called to a fire at a house in Glamis Road.
Police said a man woke to find his front door in flames after reports a bag containing petrol cans had been left on the doorstep and set alight.
Pictures show the blackened front door of the home where windows were also damaged.
Police confirmed all five people inside the property escaped unhurt.
Witnesses said there were three fire engines at the scene following the report at around 2.50am.
After the flames were extinguished, neighbours said Nottinghamshire Police began their enquiries with a fire investigation team also on-site.
One woman, who did not wish to be named, said: “It is very worrying.
“I think a neighbour even tried to help put it out.
“There was an ambulance here blocking the street too.
“There are mostly families on this road, nice people.”
Another resident who wished to remain anonymous said: “It’s quite frightening being so close to us.
“I heard the fire engines but I just assumed it was trucks or maybe bin men so I didn’t go to look.
“But it’s good to see the fire service did a great job.
“It’s just concerning for us all especially with children.”
At the scene yesterday police officers were carrying out their enquiries while fire investigators worked at the front door.
A cordon was in place across the property.
A third resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: “It is shocking and it worries me that it is so close.
“It’s worrying for anyone here with children, some are single parents or people at home on their own.”
A local councillor for the area confirmed they would be looking to speak with community protection about working alongside the police and fire service, and provide reassurance to the community.
Detective Sergeant Andy Buxton, said: “This was incredibly frightening for those at the house to wake up in the early hours and find their front door alight and it is incredibly lucky no-one was physically harmed.
“This is absolutely unacceptable and officers are working hard to gather the information we need.
“However, we would like to reassure people that we don’t believe there is any wider risk to the public and we continue our enquiries and investigation into this incident.”
