A NEW fried chicken restaurant will soon open in Nottingham city centre and create 70 new jobs after planning permission was granted.

The fast-food restaurant would make use of a building at the junction of Clumber Street and Parliament Street, which has been vacant for “many years”.

Bee World UK Ltd, part of the Jollibee Foods Corporation, was given permission by Nottingham City Council for the new eatery this week.

It has before been described as south-east Asia’s version of KFC.

Speaking of its decision, the city council said: “The site is located within the city centre and as such is a location that is considered to be sequentially preferable for a restaurant use.

“The proposal would have positive economic benefits by bringing a prominent and vacant building back into use, and the proposed use would be compatible in terms of scale with the other commercial units nearby.

“It would bring a significant investment in the city centre with the applicants indicating that it would create 70 jobs at a time when the high street is suffering.”

Jollibee has more than 1,000 restaurants worldwide and came to the UK in 2018.

It opened a restaurant in Leicester in November last year.

The restaurant is set to arrive at 46-48 Clumber Street, which was due to be a Metro Bank at one point in the past, later this year in April or May. Metro Bank shelved its plans in 2019, leaving the building vacant once again.

A consultation took place and six neighbouring properties were notified, however no responses or objections to the plans were received.

The council’s decision statement continues: “Although there are other restaurants within this part of the city centre, the proposed change of use would not result in an over concentration of restaurant/bar uses and the vitality and viability of the centre would be maintained.”
