1978:

The Arrows Formula One team made their grand prix debut, with Riccardo Patrese finishing 10th in Brazil. After 25 years in the sport, and no wins to their name, financial problems forced Arrows into liquidatio­n and out of Formula One at the end of the 2002 season.

2003:

Manchester City agreed a £6m fee with Leeds for striker Robbie Fowler.

2004:

The chairmen of the 20 Premier League clubs voted to bring in a nine-point deduction for any top-flight club entering administra­tion.

2005:

Serena Williams won the women’s singles title at the Australian Open with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 win over Lindsay Davenport.

2006:

Roger Federer won the Australian Open men’s singles title, beating Marcos Baghdatis 5-7, 7-5, 6-0, 6-2.

2007:

Alex Mcleish was appointed as Scotland’s new head coach, replacing Walter Smith. Mcleish would go on to be Nottingham Forest manager between 20122013.

2008:

Leeds United confirmed Gary Mcallister as their new manager after Dennis Wise left to join Newcastle United as their executive director of football.

2009:

Wembley Stadium was chosen by UEFA as the venue for the 2011 Champions League final, ahead of Munich’s Allianz Arena and Berlin’s Olympiasta­dion.

2011:

Newcastle United rejected a bid from Tottenham Hotspur for England striker Andy Carroll, who would move to Liverpool for £35m two days later.

2014:

England Women retained the Ashes with a nine-wicket win in their first Twenty20 internatio­nal against Australia.
