RESIDENTS in Calverton fear the village “may as well be a town” as more than 400 new homes look set to be built there

Housing developments are planned for Flatts Lane and Park Road in the village.

A total of 350 homes are to be built off Park Road by applicants Persimmon Homes at a 13.6 hectare site.

Meanwhile, in Flatts lane, 84 homes are planned, with Bellway Homes recently buying the site from Northern Trust - concerns have been raised about traffic

Calverton residents told the Post that while some welcomed the additional housing, others are worried about the potential impact on services in the town.

Eileen Macpherson, who has lived in the village for most of her life, said: “People have got to live somewhere.

“I think good things will come out of it and these people simply need somewhere to live - so why not Calverton?

“I think we should add some extra shops and services, though, if we are going to add all these houses.

“But by the time they’ve done all of that, we may as well be a town. We’ve always been a village not a town, but we are turning into Arnold with all of these developments.”

Meanwhile, Chris Bush said: “If they are going to do it - they just need to get on with it.

“It just feels like it’s taking forever and nothing much has really been done. Hopefully it will keep the shops here busy, because it’s been very quiet recently.”

Another Calverton resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I think it’s too much, honestly.

“There’s a lot of houses they’ve got planned, but what is going to happen to the schools, the doctors? A lot of these services are going to be overrun if we add all of these families.

“The infrastructure of the village just isn’t ready for it - we’re struggling already.

“Parking by the shops, for example, are they going to add any spaces? It’s things like that.

“I just don’t think we’re going to cope very well.”

Thousands of homes are planned for the Gedling borough as the council looks to build a minimum of 7,250 homes in the borough by 2028.

The much-anticipated Gedling Access Road is also scheduled for completion later this year.
