BARB & STAR GO TO VISTA DEL MAR (15) ☆☆☆☆★

TEN years after Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig seduced us with their uproarious, filthyminded script for Bridesmaids, the delightful double-act (pictured) collaborates on the page and screen for a deeply dippy road movie.

Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar warmly hugs madness and refuses to let go, spinning an outlandish tale of sisterly solidarity in the face of adversity that relishes ridiculous plot twists.

Each amusingly inane conversation between the eponymous heroines, foolishly dismissed as “a couple of pathetic Stellas trying to get their groove back”, tees up a punchline when you least expect it.

Director Josh Greenbaum garnishes his unapologetically feel-good tonic with barnstorming song and dance numbers including a chest-beating solo for Jamie Dornan, who kicks sand in the face of self-consciousness as he vocalises his character’s inner turmoil with a rock ballad to an audience of bemused birds.

FLORA & ULYSSES (PG) Preview

ADAPTED from Kate Dicamillo’s award-winning 2013 children’s book, Flora & Ulysses is a life-affirming comedy adventure for the whole family directed by Lena Khan.

Ten-year-old Flora Belle Buckman (Matilda Lawler, pictured) is an avid fan of comic books, which provide a welcome distraction from the recent separation of her parents George (Ben Schwartz) and Phyllis (Alyson Hannigan).

The girl is a self-proclaimed cynic, who finds almost no joy in the world until she rescues a squirrel named Ulysses. The animal’s brush with death causes it to develop unique superpowers.

Flora believes that Ulysses must use these newfound abilities to champion justice in their close-knit neighbourhood and the pair embark on a rollicking adventure.

PELE (PG) Preview

BORN in Tres Coracoes in Brazil, Edson Arantes do Nascimento grew up in poverty but found salvation on the football field as Pele (pictured).

Directed by David Tryhorn and Ben Nicholas, this feature-length documentary draws on unprecedented access to the player to chart a turbulent 12-year period in Brazil’s history between 1958 and 1970, when Pele graduated from promising talent to national hero and became the only man to win three World Cup titles.

The film incorporates footage and interviews with Pele’s former team-mates Jairzinho, Rivellino and Zagallo to dissect one man’s quest for perfection on the field and his enduring legacy.

■ Streaming from February 23 on Netflix
