‘Scary’ blaze leaves man badly injured
ELDERLY RESIDENT TAKEN TO HOSPITAL AFTER HOUSE FIRE
AN elderly man suffered life-threatening injuries in a house blaze which has left neighbours in shock.
Emergency services were called at 8.46am to Pinfold Road in Newthorpe yesterday following a report of smoke being seen at the property by a neighbour.
Brenda Goldsworth, who lives opposite the house which was cordoned off, said: “It’s scary, I’m also in my 90s.
“I haven’t seen the gentleman for ages. Last time I spoke to him he had a big black dog.
“I sleep downstairs and I heard a tremendous racket of fire engines and ambulances this morning.
“Much later on there were police here too.
“It was very congested, people were having a look at what was happening.
“It’s very quiet around here usually.”
A woman walking her dog said: “It’s usually very quiet around here, it’s not every day you see this.
“We’re hoping he’s okay. It’s very unfortunate.
“We saw the air ambulance land in the field this morning but we didn’t know what happened at the time.”
Another resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “We live around the corner and we heard all the sirens this morning. We didn’t know what happened. His house is hidden by the trees.
“There were three fire engines, three ambulances and police.
“We don’t know the gentleman but know he’s in his 90s.”
A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said the man had suffered life-threatening injuries despite fire crews from Eastwood, Ilkeston and
Stockhill quickly attending and the flames being quickly extinguished.
A joint police and fire investigation is now being carried out to determine the cause.
Police Sergeant Joanna Sakkalappleby is leading the investigation. She said: “Sadly an elderly man had to be taken to Queen’s Medical Centre following the report of a fire this morning.
“The fire was brought under control and a joint Fire and Police investigation is taking place to establish a cause.
“At this stage, we believe the incident not to be suspicious.
“Officers remain at the scene whilst a thorough investigation takes place.”
A section of the street was blocked for a short time to allow for a joint Fire and Police investigation to take place.
