AN investigation is ongoing after the tragic deaths of a couple who died when their car was swept away in the River Trent.

Earlier this week it was confirmed John Lillistone, 83, and Patricia Lillistone, 82, were in a car which entered the water at Hoveringham on the evening of Monday, February 1.

Following a two-week search by police, their bodies were recovered from the river on Saturday, February 13.

The couple, of Lowdham, were described as “wonderful” grandparents by their family.

Nottinghamshire Police issued a statement confirming the couple’s death and said officers would prepare a file for the coroner.

Gary Wood, Head of Highways and Transport at Nottinghamshire

County Council, has confirmed a joint investigation into the incident is underway.

He said: “Our thoughts are with the family of John and Patricia Lillistone at this time.

“The investigation into this tragic incident is ongoing, and we will continue to work closely with our partner agencies to consider any recommendations made once this has concluded.”

Councillor Roger Jackson represents the Southwell ward on Nottinghamshire County Council, which covers the Lowdham area.

He said: “We do have to wait for the coroner’s report and get the recommendations of the coroner’s report and the police.”

Chris Shaw is president of the Midland Angling Society, which owns the car park, adjacent to the river on Boat Lane, Hoveringham, near where the car was seen entering the water.

He said: “Obviously, from my point of view, the society’s point of view and the parish council’s point of view, it is an absolute tragedy

what happened. Obviously, the circumstances behind it, we don’t know.”

Helen Nall, who is chair of Hoveringham Parish Council, said “We are heartbroken for the family. I think it sums up everyone’s thoughts.

“To have that happen, it’s too awful.”

In 2019, in the same area, teacher Emma Fegan, 39, who lived in Hoveringham, died after her BMW hit standing water and left the road and went into the River Trent.
