Autumn opening date for car park and bus station

- By PHOEBE RAM

NEW pictures show the scale of progress being made at the site of the former Broadmarsh Centre.

The area has been unseen by many because of the Covid-19 pandemic restricting people to their homes, but work has been continuing at the Nottingham City Council development.

Once finished, it will provide a modern car park and bus station, new shops and a new Central Library.

It has now been confirmed that the car park and bus station are due open in the autumn.

Councillor David Mellen, leader of Nottingham City Council, said: “Our new Broadmarsh development is transformative for the area and will be a real asset to the whole area, complementing the Lace Market and surrounding area and setting a standard for future developments in the city.

“The new public realm will add a greener city centre space to dwell and relax in as we continue to create a more pleasant and vibrant entrance to Nottingham.

“Ahead of what happens next at the Broadmarsh Centre site, once we’ve analysed the feedback from our Big Conversation, it’s great to see real progress on the work we’re already doing to improve the Broadmarsh area.

“Once it’s safe to welcome visitors, learners and workers back to Nottingham, I have no doubt they’ll be really impressed with the complete change we’ve made already and the much-improved environment that’s being created for everyone to enjoy.”

The structure and glazing of the car park are now complete, with the finishing touches being added to the cladding of the building and the fins around the car park’s ramps almost done.

The roof is fitted with photovoltaic panels, enabling the building to use solar energy to generate thousands of pounds-worth of energy to be used to power facilities across the development.

A parking bay monitoring system has also been installed, meaning green lights above bays will indicate which spaces are available, rather than drivers looking round in hopes of finding a space.

In the coming months, work will continue on the fit-out of the offices, retail units, shell and core of the new Central Library and bus station.

Another element of the Broadmarsh area, the Nottingham College City Hub, was completed last month and will open once the current Covid restrictions ease.

Redevelopment of the landscape around the City Hub is also making good progress.

New paving is being laid in phases on Sussex Street, under the tram viaduct which was previously fenced off.

New planting beds have been installed which will be populated with greenery to create a more pleasant environment.

The paving on the ramp that joins Sussex Street and Middle Hill has been dug out, with work beginning on connecting the two areas.

This will include steps for an amphitheatre-style entrance to Sussex Street from Middle Hill, with work due to begin later in the year.

Work around Carrington Street starts in the coming weeks, creating a greener Collin Street to join up the new spaces due to get under way in the autumn.
