Windows of city premises smashed ‘out of frustration’, court told

A HOMELESS man was feeling low when he damaged the windows of businesses “out of frustration”, a court heard.

Adam Marriott, 37, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to four charges of causing criminal damage in Nottingham on February 20 this year.

The offences happened at The Roebuck Inn; OZ Bar; Club Arriba, all in St James’s Street, and the Skipton Building Society, which is on the corner of St James’s Street and Angel Row.

Nottingham Magistrates’ Court heard a witness had been at work when he heard a loud bang and observed Marriott picking up a kerbstone and striking The Roebuck Inn window and walking off.

Marriott damaged further properties in the street. Police received a call about his actions.

Marriott was identified as causing the damage by an officer who had dealt with him the day before. During police interview, he admitted throwing an item at The Roebuck Inn but did not remember damaging the other properties.

The court heard, in mitigation, that Marriott had pleaded guilty at the first opportunity. The criminal damage was an unplanned attack, said his lawyer.

“He has been living on the streets,” added his lawyer. “Everything was getting too much for him.

“He was very, very low. Out of frustration, he committed these offences”.

District Judge Leo Pyle said: “I take the view the sort of damage you inflicted that night is not acceptable behaviour.”

Eight weeks in prison was imposed concurrently on each charge, which was suspended for 12 months. He must also complete 10 rehabilitation activity days.

“The judge ordered Marriott pay £500 to The Roebuck Inn for the damage he caused there.
