GARNER STRIKES BUT SPOILS ARE SHARED
GARNER GETS HIS FIRST GOAL BUT REDS HAVE TO SETTLE FOR POINT
NOTTINGHAM Forest had to settle for a point away to Derby County when Colin Kazim-richards’ late strike denied them victory at Pride Park
On-loan Manchester United midfielder James Garner gave Forest the lead when he swivelled to fire a shot that sneaked past goalkeeper David Marshall.
Joe Worrall won a towering header in the build-up and it was Garner’s first goal in professional football.
Lifted by going ahead, the Reds had the better of the second half and made openings without really stretching Kelle Roos, who was in goal as a substitute after Marshall went off shortly before half time with a back problem.
But just when it looked as if they were going to celebrate a famous victory, Kazim-richards’ stunning strike from the edge of the box made the scores level six minutes from the end of normal time.
Garner’s opening goal came at a key time for Hughton’s side who had been put on the back foot for much of the first half-hour, with Brice Samba forced into a save to deny Graham Shinnie.
Yuri Ribeiro then blocked Kamil Jozwiak’s follow-up, while Jason Knight also scooped a shot over the bar after Forest had failed to deal with a corner.
Having led at the break, Hughton’s side then approached the second half hoping they could kill the game off.
But they were almost punished for a rare lapse in concentration when Cafu switched off and allowed Knight to pick out the run of striker Kazim-richards.
The striker managed to get his shot away but watched as it rolled inches wide of the post in what was a let-off for the visitors.
Luke Freeman returned fire with an effort that was deflected behind for a corner and then drove over the bar as the Reds assumed control.
But the lack of a second goal proved costly to the visitors as Kazim-richards pounced to thunder a shot past Samba after some awkward defending from Tobias Figueiredo.
Lee Gregory then gave Forest a letoff when he skewed wide while Filip Krovinovic should have done better with a header at the other end.
The point lifted Forest to 14th in the Championship table ahead of today’s matches.
