Concerns grow with return of students

-

THE University of Nottingham spring term has not yet commenced but in Lenton, a large proportion of its students have already returned and it is once more unwise for those of us who respect the necessity of Covid restrictions, and more importantly, adhere to them, to be reckless enough to venture out.

Rather foolishly, I have done that on a couple of occasions and, each time, have encountered groups of students walking closely together with no-one wearing a facemask and who have left me with no alternative to step out, usually into the road, to attempt to maintain a 2m distance.

I find it hard to believe that these educated people are really not aware of the international year-long pandemic particularly as many of them will, no doubt, have spent some time with family members during the university vacation period who might have apprised them of the particular danger of the virus to older people.

Additionally, the local park has been full of groups of students either playing ball games or sitting close together, enjoying refreshments, leaving all the wastebins in the park overflowing with the detritus.

I fear this irresponsible behaviour will continue as no-one in authority would seem either to be aware of these illegalities or concerned about them.

It does make me wonder why I have bothered to adhere strictly to the regulations since March 2020 when those that ignore them do so with complete impunity.
